I Enjoy Being A Girl...
When I have a brand new hairdo
With my eyelashes all in curl,
I float as the clouds on air do,
I enjoy being a girl!
Have you ever heard the song, I Enjoy Being a Girl? It's from the musical Flower Drum Song. It always makes me smile.
On some occasions, being female can be a pain, wouldn't you agree? I mean, for starters there's the whole monthly thing, with all of the "excitement" that goes along with it. And then there's the trouble getting respect from people like car repair men, loan officers, and salesmen at Home Depot. I really don't get into traditionally "manly" things like being able to rewire my DVD player or figure out how to unclog a dishwasher. And I despise killing bugs and spiders...that's definitely a man's job.
But...on the other hand...I was sitting at lunch with my friend Molly the other day and next to us was a table of women. As Molly left the table to use the restroom, I overheard the funniest conversations and exchanges that are so wonderfully female. They spent a good 12 minutes of their time together discussing belts. That's right...belts. Two of them realized they were wearing matching belts...and they discovered soon after that they each had the same belt in at least 2 other colors. They discussed where and when they bought the belts, how they told their friends about the belts, and which outfits they wear with which belts. Not once did they talk about sports scores, or lawn mower makes and models. It was so wonderful and refreshing.
And then, the same day, I had dinner with Laurie and Amanda. The three of us have been friends for so long that we reminisce and discuss moments shared from nearly 15 years ago.
We've been close friends for almost half of my entire life. I love these girls and love how being with them can sometimes make me feel 16 again. We giggle and talk about things that only girls can talk about.
Don't get me wrong. I love and adore my male friends. I don't know what I would do without them. But there's just something so wonderfully unique and special about girlfriends. There's no way to explain it...it just is what it is. Although I'm not a girly girl, and most of the time you'd never know it by my thoughts or actions...I truly enjoy being a girl.
